This painting is part of my Shaking Up Shakespeare Series. Although Shakespeare wrote his plays to be enjoyed by the English masses, his works today are typically consigned to academic study. I believe his stories have universal appeal and are applicable to people of diverse backgrounds, very different from his original audience. In order to emphasize the universality of his stories, I created a series of book covers in which I recast his characters as people of color.
